Time With Family Is Something We Should Never Take for Granted
There is always somewhere to go, something that needs to be done, bills to pay, work waiting on us, and responsibilities pulling us in different directions. Most of us probably wake up with a list of things we need to accomplish and go to bed wondering where the day went.
In the middle of all that, it can be easy to forget about one of the most important things in our lives spending time with our family.
I think most people would agree that family is important. We say it often. We talk about putting family first. But if we are honest with ourselves, sometimes our schedules tell a different story.
We convince ourselves that we will spend more time with the people we love when things slow down.
The problem is, things rarely slow down.
There will always be another project at work. Another meeting. Another event. Another reason to put something off until tomorrow.
And then one day, you look around and realize just how quickly the years have passed.
Children grow up. Parents get older. Grandchildren grow. People move away. Families change.
Those things happen whether we are ready for them or not.
That is why I believe we need to be intentional about spending time with our families now, not someday in the future when we think life will finally become less busy.
Some of the best memories in life are not made during expensive vacations or big events. Sometimes they are made sitting around the kitchen table talking. They happen during a family cookout, a Sunday afternoon visit, a fishing trip or simply sitting on the porch together.
Those moments may not seem important while they are happening.
Years later, they often mean everything.
I can remember times in my own life when I was in such a hurry to get somewhere or get something done that I probably missed opportunities to simply slow down and enjoy the people around me. I think many of us are guilty of that.
We get caught up in what we believe is important at the moment and forget what will really matter years from now.
The truth is, nobody lies on their deathbed wishing they had spent more time answering emails or working longer hours.
Most people wish they had spent more time with the people they loved.
That does not mean work is not important. We all have responsibilities. We have to provide for our families and take care of the things that need to be done.
But there has to be a balance.
We cannot spend our entire lives working toward a future that we forget to enjoy the present.
Our children will not remember every gift we bought them. They may not remember every dollar we spent on them either. But they will remember whether we were there.
They will remember the ballgames we attended, the conversations we had, the vacations we took and the times we simply showed up.
Being present matters.
Sometimes that means putting the phone down.
Sometimes it means leaving work a little earlier.
Sometimes it means saying no to something else so you can say yes to your family.
Time is something we all have, but none of us knows how much of it we have left. That is what makes it so valuable.
We should not wait until a loved one is gone to wish we had spent more time with them. We should not wait until our children are grown to realize how quickly those years passed.
Call your parents.
Visit your grandparents.
Take your children somewhere.
Have dinner together.
Spend time with your spouse.
Sit down and have a conversation.
It does not have to be complicated.
Family does not need another perfectly planned event. Sometimes they just need you.
The older I get, the more I realize that life is not really about how busy we are or how many things we accomplish. It is about the people we share our lives with.
One day, the work will be finished. The meetings will be forgotten. The emails will disappear.
But the memories we make with our family can stay with us for the rest of our lives.
We all have things competing for our time. That will probably never change.
But we get to decide what is worth making time for.
And in my opinion, there are few things in this life more valuable than sitting down with the people you love and simply enjoying the time you have together.
Because one day, we would probably give anything for just one more conversation, one more dinner or one more afternoon with someone we love.
Don't wait until then to realize how valuable that time really is.
