The Extra Mile Is Never Crowded

For me, going above and beyond isn’t about recognition, titles, or making sure someone notices the extra effort. It’s about holding myself to a standard. It’s about knowing that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well—and often, it’s worth doing a little more than what is expected.

A big part of that mindset comes from my faith.

My faith reminds me that my work is about more than simply completing a task. It’s an opportunity to use the abilities God has given me, serve others, and be a good steward of the opportunities He has placed in front of me. I believe there is purpose in doing things with excellence, even when nobody is watching.

That doesn’t mean I always get everything right. I don’t. But I try to approach each day knowing that I can give my best effort, learn from my mistakes, and leave things better than I found them.

My work ethic was built on a simple principle: do what needs to be done.

Sometimes that means staying a little longer. Sometimes it means taking responsibility instead of waiting for someone else to handle it. It can mean stepping up to solve a problem that technically isn’t mine or putting in the extra effort to make something the best it can be instead of settling for “good enough.”

To me, going above and beyond also means doing the small things well.

It’s showing up when I say I will. It’s keeping my word. It’s treating people with respect. It’s taking pride in what I do. It’s being willing to listen, learn, and admit when I’m wrong. And it’s choosing to do the right thing when there is no audience and no reward waiting for me.

I believe those small decisions eventually become my reputation—and, more importantly, they shape my character.

There will always be days when giving that extra effort is difficult. There will be times when hard work seems to go unnoticed or when I wonder whether doing more really makes a difference. Those are the moments when I lean even more heavily on my faith.

I remind myself that I’m not responsible for controlling every outcome, and I don’t need recognition to know that something was worth doing. My responsibility is to be faithful with what God has placed in front of me and to give my best with the opportunities I’ve been given.

That perspective keeps me moving forward.

I want the people I serve and the people closest to me to know what they can expect from me. I want them to know that when I give my word, I mean it. When I take on a responsibility, I will see it through. And when there is an opportunity to do a little more, help someone, or make something better, I’m willing to step up.

At the end of the day, going above and beyond isn’t one big heroic act. It’s a way of living.

It’s choosing effort over excuses.

Excellence over convenience.

Service over recognition.

Faith over fear.

I don’t want to simply meet expectations in my work or in my life. I want to make the most of the opportunities God has given me and be able to look back knowing I gave them everything I had.

Because when my faith is strong, my purpose is clear, and my work ethic follows.

And for me, that will always mean doing a little more than what is required.
