CAREGIVER ARRESTED FOR ELDER NEGLECT
PUTNAM COUNTY, TN— On April 13, 2026, Adult Protective Services contacted Putnam County
Sheriff’s Office Detective Josie Garrett regarding alleged neglect and financial exploitation of an 84-
year-old victim by his grandson and caretaker, Brandon McBroom.
Detective Garrett and Adult Protective Services responded to the victim’s residence, where they found
the victim living in extremely poor conditions. According to the investigation, the victim had not been
Bathed in weeks, was experiencing shortness of breath, and was unable to answer basic questions.
Investigators observed deplorable living conditions, including non-functioning bathrooms, caved-in flooring,
trash and dirt covering surfaces, and very little food inside the home. Due to the victim’s condition, he
was transported by EMS for medical treatment.
It was discovered that the victim was suffering from severe malnutrition, which had led to multiple addi-
tional medical complications. Investigators determined the victim’s nutritional needs had not been ade-
Quately met by his caregiver.
The investigation also uncovered evidence of financial exploitation. Between January and March of
2026, the victim reportedly overdrew his bank account multiple times and failed to receive checks
mailed to his residence. A review of bank records revealed that McBroom allegedly transferred approxi-
mately $4,460.50 from the victim’s bank account into his own personal account through 30 separate
transactions. Investigators also determined that two of the victim’s checks had been deposited into
McBroom’s personal account.
On June 30, 2026, Brandon McBroom was arrested and charged with Aggravated Neglect of an El-
derly Adult, Theft of Property, and Financial Exploitation of an Elderly Adult. McBroom has a bond set
at $143,000 and a court date of August 10, 2026.
The victim is now residing in a safe place with proper care.
Sheriff Eddie Farris said, “Our elderly citizens deserve dignity, compassion, and protection. I appreciate
the work of Detective Garrett and Adult Protective Services for ensuring this victim is now safe and re-
ceiving the care he deserves. If you suspect an elderly person is being abused, neglected, or financially
exploited, I encourage you to report it immediately.”
