A double rainbow over Algood: A reminder to look up

by Becky Rios Morrison

As thunderstorms moved through Algood this week, many of us did what we often do during unsettled weather — we hurried indoors, watched the skies darken, and waited for the rain to pass.

Then something remarkable happened.

As the storm began to move away and sunlight broke through the clouds, a brilliant rainbow appeared over our community. Moments later, a second rainbow emerged, creating a breathtaking double rainbow stretching across the sky above Algood.

In a world where our attention is often focused on schedules, responsibilities, news headlines and the challenges of everyday life, a rainbow has a way of making us stop. It causes us to put down our phones, step outside, and simply look up.

Children point toward it with excitement. Neighbors call each other outside. People who may have been complete strangers a few minutes before suddenly share a smile as they admire the same view.

There is something deeply meaningful about a rainbow appearing after a storm. Whether viewed through faith, science, or simply appreciation for nature's beauty, it serves as a reminder that difficult moments do not last forever. Storms pass. Sunshine returns. Beauty often appears when we least expect it.

A double rainbow feels even more special. It is rare enough to capture our attention and powerful enough to remind us that some of life's greatest gifts are completely free. They cannot be bought, planned, or scheduled. They simply appear, inviting us to pause and appreciate the moment.

The photographs taken in Algood that evening captured more than colorful bands across the sky. They captured a moment of wonder, gratitude, and perspective. For a few minutes, people stopped what they were doing and shared the same experience together.

Perhaps that is the true significance of a rainbow.

Not just the colors. Not just the science.

But the reminder that even after dark clouds and heavy rain, there is still beauty waiting to be found — if we remember to look up.
