The Wall That Heals returns to Cookeville Oct. 22–25
Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial to offer four days of remembrance at new Putnam County Fairgrounds
Submitted by Tessa Davis, Cookeville-Putnam County Visitors Bureau
The Wall That Heals, a traveling three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will return to Cookeville Oct. 22–25 at the new Putnam County Fairgrounds, 2121 Event Center Drive.
Hosted by Putnam County in partnership with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the free exhibit will offer residents and visitors an opportunity to honor Vietnam veterans, remember those who died and reflect on the lasting impact of their service.
According to information provided by the Cookeville-Putnam County Visitors Bureau, nine Putnam County service members who died during the Vietnam War are among those whose names appear on the memorial.
The exhibit last visited Cookeville in 2018, drawing more than 30,000 people and setting a Tennessee attendance record for the traveling memorial, according to the release.
“The return of The Wall That Heals to Putnam County is an incredible honor for our community. When we hosted this memorial in 2018, we witnessed firsthand the powerful impact it had on veterans, families, and visitors from across the region. This is more than an exhibit; it is an opportunity to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom, including nine heroes from right here in Putnam County. We are proud to welcome The Wall That Heals home once again and invite everyone to join us in honoring their service, sacrifice, and legacy,” Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter said.
This year’s exhibit will be held at the new fairgrounds, part of the developing Putnam County Event Center complex on Tennessee Avenue. The location offers access from Interstate 40 and ample parking for visitors from across the region.
“Tourism is about more than bringing visitors to a destination; it is about creating experiences that connect people, communities, and generations. The Wall That Heals is one of those truly special experiences. We are honored to welcome visitors from across Tennessee’s Upper Cumberland and beyond to Cookeville for an event that carries such deep significance. Hosting this nationally recognized memorial at our new Putnam County Fairgrounds provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase our community's hospitality while offering a place for remembrance. We hope every visitor leaves with a renewed appreciation for the sacrifices made by our nation's veterans,” said Shan Stout, executive director of tourism.
Community invited to welcome memorial
Residents, businesses and community organizations are invited to welcome The Wall That Heals as it is escorted into Cookeville.
The procession is scheduled to enter Cookeville at noon, traveling along East Spring Street through downtown to the Putnam County Courthouse. From there, it will continue along Highway 70 to Tennessee Avenue before arriving at the new fairgrounds.
Community members are encouraged to gather safely along the route, wave American flags and honor the veterans and service members represented by the memorial. The escort date was not specified in the release.
