Woman arrested following disturbance at Jere Whitson ball fields

A woman was arrested on a public intoxication charge Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, after the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a woman shouting obscenities at children participating in baseball practice at the Jere Whitson Ball Fields.

Deputy Justin Cobble responded to the ball fields at 1920 Mississippi Avenue and located Brandi Mendez in a wooded area nearby, according to the sheriff’s office. Cobble observed multiple beer containers around her and reported that she exhibited several signs of impairment.

Cobble repeatedly instructed Mendez to leave the wooded area, but she initially refused to comply, the sheriff’s office said.

Based on the reports of her behavior and her level of impairment, Mendez was arrested and issued a trespass notice covering all properties listed in the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Trespass Enforcement Program.

Mendez was charged with public intoxication. Her bond was set at $431.50.

“Children and families should be able to enjoy our community’s ball fields without being subjected to disruptive behavior,” Sheriff Eddie Farris said. “Our Deputies will continue to respond to these concerns and take appropriate enforcement action to keep these spaces safe.”
